‘an/other pastoral’ meet the artist

Meet Tebogo Cranwell, the artist behind the incredible illustrations that grace the cover and pages of an/other pastoral by Tjawangwa Dema.

Tebogo Cranwell is a self taught Motswana artist, based in Botswana, who began experimenting with pen and paper to escape the boredom of university lecture halls and now her entire focus is on creating work that explores beauty, femininity, sensuality and intimacy.

Using predominantly black ink on a white surface, she has always been fascinated by the way the two colours interact; acting as each other’s opposites, light and dark, presence and absence, they are also each other’s continuum. She uses them to bring a subtle and modern feel to her works through a distinctive balance of fluid, intricate lines, and bold and expressive portraiture.

She explores the tension between positive and negative space by using the power of suggestion to prove that sometimes what isn’t said is just as – or even more - important as what is, and that there are stories to tell in this silence.

Highly influenced by the minimalist aesthetic, Tebogo is committed to finding new ways to tell these stories without saying too much.

an/other pastoral is set for release on 22nd April 2022. It is available for pre-order to Europe directly from No Bindings - just visit our SHOP. In the UK, you can order it from your favourite indie bookshop now.
